Nella collezione Autunno-Inverno 2020-21 Judy Zhang continua l’antico racconto popolare cinese “Legend of the White Snake”. Una trilogia che si sviluppa su tre collezioni diverse. La prima è raccontata con la SS20 e si focalizza sul così detto “Duan Qiao Xiang Yu”, ossia l’incontro fatidico sul ponte tra il serpente bianco e il suo amante Xu Xian. La seconda prende vita con la FW20_21, dove la creatività della designer è ispirata dal racconto influenzato fortemente dal film “Green Snake” di Tsui Hark del 1992. La terza e ultima opera la scopriremo con la misteriosa collezione SS21… La protagonista indiscussa che dá carattere all’intera collezione è la scena più iconica della leggenda, Shuî Màn Jīn Shān (il diluvio del tempio di Jinshan) dove il serpente bianco combatte per proteggere il suo amore. L’intera scena si concentra su un’immagine sfocata di acqua, montagne, cielo e l’odore del fumo della battaglia. La sorella del serpente bianco, Green Snake (Qing She) combatte insieme a lei all’interno di questa pendenza sfocata di colori. Il loro coraggio simboleggia in questa stagione il nuovo tema: “combattere per amore”. La scena che fornisce l’ispirazione visiva alla collezione è proprio quella della battaglia “Fighting for Love” e la grafica si modernizza con la rappresentazione di uno smartphone americano, dove sul display compare un messaggio in italiano con la parola “Aiuto”. I tre mondi rappresentati in questa scena – la Cina con il leggendario racconto, l’America con il tipico mobile e l’Italia con la parole usata per il messaggio – incarnano appieno il connubio della cultura occidentale e orientale che la designer Judy mixa sapientemente nelle sue collezioni. La tavolozza dei colori scelta per questa stagione è il bianco, del White Snake e naturalmente il verde, oltre al nero e al rosso della scena della battaglia. L’oro è riservato ai ricami del serpente e ai tessiti scintillanti che ricordano la sua pelle. I tessuti lussuosi, arricchiti con attenti dettagli sartoriali, caratterizzano la selettiva scelta della designer che propone i capi in seta, lana, pizzo francese e tessuto giapponese speciale. Il serpente continua ad essere il personaggio principale e indiscusso, attraverso il famoso ricamo di Suzhou. Con le perline, invece, sono realizzati i ricami che richiamano le armature usate nei campi di battaglia. I tessuti che ricordano la pelle del serpente caratterizzano gli inconfondibili suit “patched worked”. L’importante struttura delle spalle delle giacche e delle camicie sono realizzate con una particolare tecnica e rievocano la forma del serpente in movimento. Infine, le frange sapientemente usate per arricchire i sorprendenti e inconfondibili look della collezione, ricordano quelle usate dai cowboy americani e simboleggiano il coraggio e l’indipendenza delle donne alle quali Judy dedica le sue creazioni. I completi attillati e la minigonna con le frange (coraggio) e le perline (delle armature), raccontano il carattere della donna di Judy Zhang che si contraddistingue per il coraggio, l’indipendenza e la ricercata sensualità, sempre pronta a lottare per l’amore in cui crede anche contro ogni convenzione.
Throughout her F/W 20-21 collection Judy Zhang is able to keep on narrating the “Legend of the White Snake”, a trilogy developed on three different collections. The first one is told by the SS20 collection, utterly focused on the saying “Duan Qiao Xiang Yu” which refers to the fateful meeting on a bridge between the white snake and her lover Xu Xian. The second one comes to life thanks to the F/W 20-21 collection, where the creativity of the designer is inspired by the tale in its turn strongly influenced by the movie “Green Snake”, Tsui Hark 1992. The third and last work will be discovered with the mysterious SS21 collection…. The unquestioned protagonist gives a clear attitude to the entire collection, representing herself the most iconic scene of the legend, Shuî Màn Jīn Shān, where the white snake fights for his life in order to protect her beloved. The entire scene is centered on a blurred image of the sky, water, mountains and the smokey smell of the battle. The white snake’s sister, Green snake, fights by her side proving an unconditional courage which symbolizes the new theme of this season: “fighting for love”. The scene gives a visual inspiration to the collection and the graphic gets modernised with a depiction of an american smartphone displaying a text saying ‘aiuto’, italian for help. The three worlds represented in this scene – China with its legendary tale, America with its signature mobile and Italy with text words – fully embody the bond between the occidental and oriental culture, wisely mixed by Judy in her collections. The color palette selected for this season is white snake’s white and green, besides black and red whereas gold is reserved for the snake’s embroideries and for the glistening fabrics which remind her own skin. The luxurious fabrics, enriched by mindful sartorial details, characterize the selective choice of the designer who proposes garments made out of silk, wool, french lace and unique japanese fabrics. The snake keeps on unarguably leading the scene through the famous Suzhou’s embroidery, whereas pearls were chosen for the embroideries invoking the armors worn in the battle fields and snakeskin-like fabrics were picked for the distinctive “patched worked” suits. The essential structure for the shoulders was made by a specific technique reminiscent of the moving shape of the snake. Finally, the incredible and singular looks of this collection were finely embellished by some frange, recalling the ones used by american cowboys which epitomize the bravery and the freedom of the women to whom Judy dedicated her creations.
